Silver City, NM, March 25, 2020 — The onset of spring brings strong winds, low humidity and Red Flag Warnings for southwestern New Mexico. The Gila National Forest has already had one abandoned campfire. The forest fire management staff has made the decision to move to MODERATE FIRE DANGER.

With the emphasis on dispersed camping increasing, Gila National Forest officials remind visitors to always practice fire safety and practice self-patrolling. "Fire safety is everyone's responsibility," said Gabe Holguin, Gila NF Fire Management Officer. He added, "Please be extremely cautious with any activity that may cause a wildfire."

Please follow these campfire guidelines:

Every campfire will be put DEAD OUT before leaving it.
