Silver City, NM, May 12, 2020 – The Gila National Forest Wilderness Ranger District reopened the restrooms and has set up a large dumpster at the Lake Roberts Boat Dock and recreation area.
Despite the open restrooms and available dumpster, district employees found large amounts of trash on the ground around the locked bear-proof trash cans, Charmin flowers and signs that people are not using the restrooms appropriately.
Here are some useful tools while visiting public lands while promoting stewardship:
- Pick up your trash and throw it in the dumpster. If the dumpster is full, take it home with you and dispose of it there.
- Use the restrooms in an appropriate manner.
- Bring your own hand sanitizer.
- Leave the area better than you found it.
New Mexico State Health Guidelines per the Modified Public Health Order effective May 1, 2020:
- Continue maintaining gatherings of no more than five people
- New Mexicans remain at home except for outings essential to health, safety and welfare
Law Enforcement will be out and actively monitoring usage, compliance, and social distancing guidelines. They have been issuing citation notices for failing to dispose of garbage, waste or sewage in the proper receptacles.
