Luna County, NM -  On June 20, 2020, the New Mexico State Police responded to a fatal crash on Interstate 10 westbound at the 83-mile marker.

The initial investigation indicates that for reasons unknown, a 2016 Nissan truck was traveling east in the wrong direction on Interstate 10 in the westbound lanes and struck a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer head-on that was traveling west in the westbound lane. After the initial crash, the Nissan was struck by a 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer also traveling west in the westbound lane of Interstate 10. 

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, Armando Benavidez (80) of Deming, NM was killed in the collision.  He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The drivers of the tractor-trailers were uninjured in the crash.  

This crash is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and seatbelts do not appear to have been properly worn.
