WILL puts spotlight on recycling effort, collaborative art endeavor in webinars

Recycling in Silver City will be the topic May 1 for the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning Lunch and Learn webinar “Inside Silver City Recycles.” (Photo courtesy Silver City Recycles)SILVER CITY — Three Lunch and Learn webinars which focus on the environment and the arts will be presented by the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning in May. The webinars, held  online from noon to 1 p.m. Saturdays, run May 1 through May 22 and are free and open to the public.

Kick off the month with an inside look at local recycling May 1 with moderator Chris Lemme during “Inside Silver City Recycles.” Silver City began their curbside recycling program around 1995, and for 24 years residents participated in curbside recycling until the municipal recycling program was discontinued just a few years ago.

Silver City Recycles, a private nonprofit, was formed to address local needs and the new recycling environment. Participants will learn how Silver City Recycles operates to assure that recycling is sustainable; how it strives to benefit county residents, businesses, and the town; and how you can engage as a volunteer. The webinar will be held from noon-1 p.m.

You can quench your thirst for live theater May 8 when members of  The Virus Theater Ensemble present “Devising Movement Based Collaborative Art.” Kristen Warnack, Teresa Dahl-Bredine and Jessa Tumposky are members of a dynamic troupe of actors, writers, designers, and directors who collaborate to create imaginative and highly physical devised theater.  The Ensemble’s live theater season and first regional tour for 2020 was postponed because of the pandemic. In response the group launched a Patreon page offering their local and virtual community new video and audio theatrical pieces along with filmed portions of live theater performances in the past. The webinar will be held from noon-1 p.m.

Wrap up May when the Silver City Museum partners with WILL to present “Sharing Our Grant County History in Murals,” May 22 moderated by Diana Ingalls Leyba. For 17 years, Grant County and Silver City have watched schoolchildren and Leyba design, create, and install murals on buildings, walls, and playgrounds throughout the community.  Learn the backstory for those murals — especially the storytelling aspect of murals and their role in the transfer of history and culture from one generation to another. The webinar will be held from noon-1 p.m.
