“Kids and adults are invited to audition for ‘The Giver’ Saturday, August 20, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at The Oasis Coffee and Tea House, 714 N. Bullard St.,” according to Wendy Spurgeon, Silver City Community Theatre (SCCT) Artistic Director. “The cast is large—6 youth roles and 4 adult roles—and many extras of all ages. This is a memorable, exciting play about a boy discovering what it means to grow up, grow wise, and take control of his own destiny, and we are excited to bring it to Silver City and Grant County.”

“A 2-act play adapted by Eric Coble from Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel, ‘The Giver’ tells the story of  a boy, Jonas, about to turn 12 who lives in a dystopian world, a society free of crime, sadness, and choices,” Spurgeon says. “At the age of 12 children are assigned their jobs, which they will train for and do for the rest of their lives. Everything is chosen, including your parents and life partners. Jonas, who is about to turn 12, is assigned the job to receive and keep the memories of the community, the ONLY person who holds the memories of real pain and joy.

  • FATHER:  Jonas’ good-natured Father
  • MOTHER:  Jonas’ good-natured mother
  • LILY:  Jonas’ 7-yearold sister
  • JONAS: an 11-year-old about to grow older
  • ASHER:  Jonas’ best friend
