On the 84th Anniversary, SCCT Willl Recreate the Famous Radio Show, "The War of the Worlds"

“When Orson Welles broadcast “The War of the World” on Halloween Eve in 1938 it was so realistic many people panicked and some even fled their homes,” according to Wendy Spurgeon, Artistic Director of Silver City Community Theatre (SCCT.) “We’re going to recreate the show for its 84th Anniversary …hopefully with a lot of excitement but less panic on KURU on October 30 for our regularly scheduled 5 p.m. SCCT Radio hour.
“Auditions for “The War of the Worlds” radio broadcast will be Saturday, August 13, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at The Oasis Coffee and Tea House, 714 N. Bullard St. Voice acting requires no memorization, and is a good way to tryout acting,” according to Spurgeon. “It’s a big cast, with many roles for men. There are actually 26 characters; however, 12 voice actors are needed to perform those parts. The show will be recorded over three days before a live audience, and air on KURU/GMCR 98.1 FM on Sunday, October 30, with a listening party for cast and community.“
’The War of the Worlds’ was a Halloween episode of the radio series The Mercury Theatre on the Air - directed and narrated by Orson Welles as an adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel of the same name. It was broadcast live at 8 pm on October 30, 1938, over CBS radio network,” said Spurgeon.
Spurgeon says SCCT will be casting for the following voice acting parts:

- Reporter Carl Phillips/2X2L radio operator
- Second studio announcer/Fascist stranger
- Mr. Wilmuth/Mr. Harry McDonald, vice president in charge of radio operations/Fourth studio announcer, from roof of Broadcasting B
- Policeman at Wilmuth farm/Captain Lansing of the Signal Corps/Secretary of the Interior/Bayonne radio operator
- Brigadier General Montgomery Smith/22nd
- Field Artillery Officer/Langham Field radio operator Field artillery observer
- Lieutenant Voght, bombing commander
- Newark radio operator/8X3R radio operator
