Civil Discourse, a public affairs program of Gila/Mimbres Community Radio, will present three half-hour interviews on Saturday, August 6, 2022, beginning at 11:00 a.m., on the impacts of the July 16, 1945 atomic bomb test on New Mexicans, the experiences of those who lived near the Trinity Site where the test took place, and the quest for global nuclear disarmament. The interviews will be broadcast on the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, on KURU 89.1 FM and streamed on the Internet at GMCR.org. 

Jamie Newton, Host of Civil Discourse, will interview:

• The Most Reverend John C. Wester, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Santa Fe, on his pastoral letter of January 11, 2022, entitled “Living in the Light of Christ’s Peace: Toward a Conversation on Nuclear Disarmament”;
• Elva K. Osterreich, Editor of Desert Exposure, on her 2021 book, “The Manhattan Project Trinity Test: Witnessing the Bomb in New Mexico”; and

• Tina Cordova, co-founder and Coordinator of The Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, on her organization’s work to promote justice for New Mexicans who continue to suffer from the effects of the 1945 Trinity Test that ushered in the nuclear age.
