Santa Fe – Today, Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas (D-Albuquerque) released the following statement on the Governor’s veto of House Bill 564, Probation and Parole Procedures:

“I look forward to working during the interim with the DAs Association and other stakeholders to create an even better bill next year. With the Governor’s urging, hopefully they’ll come to the table and work with lawmakers.

“I will continue to work on probation and parole reforms that will improve public safety and reduce recidivism rates by expanding the use of swift, certain and proportionate sanctions as well as validated risk assessments. In recent years, at least 15 states have adopted laws designed to achieve those goals. After South Carolina lawmakers passed such legislation in 2010, there was a 46% drop in the number of revocations to jail or prison, according to a 2017 evaluation.”
