Angel Fire, NM - On May 5, 2019 New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate a police shooting involving the Angel Fire Police Department.

The initial investigation indicates that on the morning of May 5, 2019 an Angel Fire Police officer responded to a residential structure fire at 14 Mountain Lake Terrace in Angel Fire, NM.  At the scene, the Angel Fire Police officer encountered a man with a knife.  During the encounter, the Angel Fire Police officer discharged his weapon.  The assailant was struck by the officer’s gunfire, and later died in the ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator. 

The shooting and fire investigation are in preliminary stages with no additional information available.  The identification of the deceased man with the knife is pending positive identification by the Office of the Medical Investigator. State Police agents are working with the State Fire Marshalls Office to determine the cause of the fire.  The identification of the Angel Fire Police officer involved will not be released until the investigation progresses.
