Lincoln County, NM – On May 6, 2019 at about 12:08 a.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal head-on crash on U.S. 54, around mile post 169, near Corona, NM. 

The initial investigation shows a 2003 Hyundai passenger car, driven by Gail F. Cornwell (55) of El Paso, TX was traveling south on U.S. 54.  For unknown reasons the Hyundai crossed over onto the northbound lane of traffic and collided head-on with a 2004 Ford F-350 that was towing a trailer and traveling north.  The Ford was driven by a 42-year-old male of Golden, CO. The driver of the Hyundai, Gail Cornwell sustained fatal injuries and she was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of Medical Investigator. The driver of the Ford, and a 21-year-old male passenger sustained unknown injuries. Both were treated on scene by emergency personnel and released.

There were two other passengers in the Hyundai, a 54-year-old male and a 48-year-old male both of Colorado.  The 54-year-old male was uninjured. The 48-year-old male sustained unknown injuries and he was treated on scene by emergency personnel and released.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and seatbelts appear to have been properly utilized. No additional information is available.
