While regular school days at home might have come to an end for summer, the learning continues for many families, whether parents are choosing to continue summer learning for their children or students are trying to stay on top of challenging subjects before school starts back up in the fall.

Math can be one of those challenges, and parents don’t always have the tools to help a child solve a tough problem – which could leave students or parents feeling stuck. That’s why New Mexico State University’s Math Department is opening up its online tutoring center to the community this summer.

The center’s tutors are graduate students in the Math Department with a wide knowledge of mathematics and statics and will provide guidance to anyone in search of a little help.

John Harding, department head of mathematical sciences, said he anticipates most users will be looking for help with higher-level math disciplines, but families with younger students are welcome, too.

“If a younger student had troubles, it might be best if the parent contacted the tutoring center or parent and child together contacted the tutoring center,” Harding said.

Harding also mentioned that if an adult wishing to return to university wanted to refresh their math skills, they would be very welcome, as would a recent high school graduate who wanted to spend some of our shut-in summer getting a head start on classes in the fall.

The online service is free and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday to Thursday until June 30. For more information and to receive tutoring help, visit: https://math.nmsu.edu/online-tutoring/.
