New Mexico Forestry and State Parks Division’s team up on projects

SANTA FE, NM – The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department Forestry and State Parks Divisions are working together on wildfire resilience while also creating much needed rural jobs. Local contractors are being utilized for projects taking place at Coyote Creek State Park near Mora, NM and Manzano Mountains State Park in Mountainair, NM, which will support approximately 16-20 jobs.

“Right now, it’s more crucial than ever to keep our economy moving in rural areas where many of our State Parks are located,” said Laura McCarthy, State Forester. “By utilizing local contractors and resources, we can help these small communities and businesses stay afloat while also getting significant work completed to support our watersheds and build resilience against the threat of climate change and wildfire.”

“Our parks not only provide cultural and economic value, but they are also essential for our social well-being,” said Christy Tafoya, State Parks Director. “The jobs created will have an immediate impact on the local communities, while we work to ensure the land and its resources are healthy and viable for generations to come.”

The projects at Coyote Creek and Manzano Mountains State Parks encompass more than 70 acres and will help mitigate the threat of wildfire, build fire resistance, combat insect and disease infestation, remove hazards to the public, and improve the natural beauty of the parks. All projects are done in accordance with COVID-19 safety measures in place.
