PNM celebrates National Drive Electric Week with new goals to expand electric vehicle fleet

50% of all new light duty fleet purchases will be electric by 2030

(Albuquerque, NM) – PNM is stepping up to a new goal when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs). By 2025, 25% of all light duty fleet purchases by PNM Resources, the parent company of PNM, will be electric. By 2030, that number will grow to 50%. Light duty fleet consists of sedans, vans, SUVs, and most pickup trucks, such as F150s.

“Moving to EVs is not only beneficial to the environment,” said Tony Lucero, PNM Resources Fleet Manager, “but also reduces the fuel costs of our fleet and increases its reliability. The portion of our light duty fleet that is EV has already proven to be extremely reliable and cost effective.”

Alaric Babej, PNM Product Development Project Manager, spoke to how this new goal changes the company’s focus moving forward. “This goal significantly advances our previous commitment designed to electrify our fleet by focusing on the replacement vehicles as they retire with EVs. National Drive Electric Week is an ideal time to share this new commitment.”

As part of the PNM Energy Solutions Webinar Series, Babej co-hosted a virtual event earlier this month designed to introduce business customers to electric vehicles, including charging infrastructure and economic benefits, along with sharing the latest efforts and commitment by PNM towards transportation electrification. Today’s commitment follows an announcement from the US Department of Transportation in late June to designate the first Alternative Fuel Corridors throughout New Mexico. PNM partnered with the New Mexico Department of Transportation, New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources, and the Land of Enchantment Clean Cities Coalition to earn this designation.

The corridors represent an infrastructure network along national highways to encourage EV charging and other alternative fuels. PNM remains committed to supporting both the existing and development of additional electric infrastructure along the Corridor-Ready section for EV charging between Albuquerque and Santa Fe as well as the Corridor-Pending sections along the rest of I-25, I-10, and I-40.  

PNM is encouraging customers to learn more about EVs by joining the PNM EV Community. Registration can be found at www.pnm.com/ev. This community is open to all PNM customers and will include updates about the PNM EV programs along with other news related to EVs that the community members will hear first.
