Quay County, NM - On September 29, 2020, a New Mexico State Police officer patrolling U.S. Highway 54 northeast of Tucumcari, initiated a traffic stop on a blue Dodge Durango for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop, the state police officer identified the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle as Brandon Gwynn (36) of (Louisville, KY). Following a driver’s license check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, the officer learned  Gwynn had an Arrest Warrant out of Kentucky for a probation violation on charges of 1st Degree Burglary, Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree, Tampering with Evidence, and Trafficking Marijuana.

When the officer began to arrest Gwynn, who was now standing next to the officer’s patrol unit, he ran back to his vehicle and sped away. A pursuit ensued reaching speeds of more than 130 miles per hour. The pursuing officer experienced mechanical issues with their patrol unit and the pursuit was discontinued. Approximately twenty minutes after NMSP discontinued the pursuit, officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on State Road 93 near milepost 1 east of San Jon, NM.

When officers arrived at the reported crash location, they found it to be the same Dodge Durango Gwynn had used to flee from the officer. The vehicle had been abandoned, and Gwynn was not at the crash scene. Officers seized the vehicle and executed a search warrant on the vehicle where they located approximately 10 ounces of suspected cocaine. Officers later located Gwynn walking on Quay Road M, and after a short foot pursuit, Gwynn was taken into custody.

Gwynn was booked into the Quay County Detention Center for Aggravated Fleeing of a Law Enforcement Officer, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer, and Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. This case is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police
