New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering has a new graduate program in information technology. The Professional Master’s in Information Technology has received final approvals from the New Mexico Higher Learning Commission.

This state-of-the-art, fully online graduate program is designed for working professionals who have obtained an undergraduate degree in information technology or a closely related field of study. The program consists of 10 innovative courses that provide advanced learning in the areas of enterprise architecture, computer networking, enterprise security, as well as software development and IT operations. Participants also can choose elective courses from the Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Business Computer Information Systems and Computer Science Departments.

“Career opportunities in information technology continue to grow during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rolfe Sassenfeld, associate professor of engineering technology. “The increased number of employees working from home has meant more investment and reliance on digital information service technologies.

“The instructors and curriculum of the Professional Master’s in Information Technology are designed to enhance the student’s overall IT capabilities while also fostering individual and team project development skills,” Sassenfeld said. “We expect to have a visiting professor this spring who is an IT professional from Los Alamos National Laboratories to enrich students’ learning experience and marketability.”

Applications are accepted on a year-round basis and there is still time for acceptance into the spring 2021 semester. Applicants to the program should visit the NMSU graduate program application site at https://online.nmsu.edu/degree-programs-2/ and choose Professional Masters – Information Technology for the correct application. Program applicants are required to provide a statement of purpose and contact information for two references in addition to academic transcripts.

The program also offers an accelerated master’s program that allows current seniors in technology degrees to take courses for the graduate degree while in their last year of undergraduate studies. This path allows undergraduates to get a head start on a graduate degree and reduces the time to graduation.
