The Department of English at New Mexico State University is launching a new fully online master’s program to help technical and professional communicators advance their careers and enrich their skills.

Students from New Mexico pay in-state tuition to work closely with NMSU faculty, who tailor courses to contemporary trends and technologies in communication and mentor students to build on their existing skills and strengths.

Prospective students can apply by June 15 for a master’s degree in English, technical and professional communication to begin in the fall 2021 semester, or by Oct. 1 to begin in the spring 2022 semester. Once in the program, students can expect a combination of theoretical and practical courses, including media theory and practice, web design, technical editing, user experience, and grant writing, among others.

The program culminates with the production of a professional portfolio, through which students demonstrate their expertise. Students who earn the degree can find careers or expand employment opportunities as technical writers and editors, nonprofit writers, digital designers, data analysts and more.

The new degree program is inspired by NMSU’s land-grand mission and Hispanic-serving designation to be broadly accessible, including for working adults in New Mexico and beyond. Students from the region will feel the support and community of an on-campus program, with individualized feedback and mentoring, accessible content and faculty, and peer cohorts.

Applications for the degree must include a statement of purpose, current resume, writing samples, three letters of recommendation and transcripts from an undergraduate degree.
