Jagdish Khubchandani, a public health professor at New Mexico State University, has been elected to serve as the secretary for the World Association of Medical Editors.
WAME, founded in 1995, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality and credibility of medical scholarship. It brings together editors of peer-reviewed medical journals from more than 50 countries and serves as a central resource for guidance, training and policy development in scientific publishing.
Khubchandani joined NMSU in 2020 and has coauthored more than 200 original articles in the field of medicine and public health in the world's most prestigious journals. He has also served in key editorial roles for numerous peer-reviewed journals.
Khubchandani was nominated and elected to serve as WAME secretary among a pool of more than 1,500 journal editors who also are members of WAME. His position runs through 2027.
"It is my honor to serve an organization like WAME that has a very firm commitment to strengthening editorial standards, promoting integrity in medical publishing, and fostering international collaboration," Khubchandani said.
Before being elected as secretary, Khubchandani had been a regular member of WAME for more than a decade and previously served as one of the organization's directors. As secretary, he will support WAME's governance and record-keeping, coordinate all WAME leadership team meetings, and serve as the general correspondent for the organization, handling official communications on its behalf.
"We are delighted to welcome Jagdish as secretary of WAME. His deep experience in medical and public health research will be an enormous asset as we continue to strengthen global standards in scholarly medical publishing," WAME President Chris Zielinski said in a statement.
In recent years, WAME has supported multi-journal editorials on the impact of climate change on health and of the increasing dangers of nuclear weapons. WAME's guidelines, including recent updates on chatbots, artificial intelligence and scholarly manuscripts, have also been widely cited.
Khubchandani said WAME's core activities include providing training and educational resources for medical editors worldwide, promoting ethical conduct in research and publishing, and developing editorial standards and best-practice guidelines.
