hammackJoyce Marie Hammack, age 90, a resident of Silver City since 1948 passed away on April 5, 2020. She was born in Crosbyton, Texas November 6, 1929 to James and Louise Baker. She was the seventh child in a family of ten siblings. She has one sister left, Ruth, from Waco, TX. She met her husband, William Taylor Hammack, Jr, while he was home on leave from the Navy during WWII. They were married November 17, 1947 in Hamilton, Texas. Taylor had completed college after discharge from the Navy and was offered an office manager position with Clifton Chevrolet. Joyce was a senior in high school when they married.

They moved to Silver City in January 1948 where she finished her high school at State Teachers High School. In 1957, she began her career with the unemployment office in Silver City as a clerk/stenographer. She retired in 1997 as the area director for the Department of Labor her last 14 years with the department. She was a member of TOPS and served as the recorder for many years. She was also involved with the Chamber of Commerce. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Madrid. Shirley is married to Richard A Madrid. Joyce also is survived by one son, Ricky L Hammack. Ricky is married to Connie A Hammack. Joyce has seven grandchildren. Stephen Quiroz (Darrell), Misty Madrid, Marcella Madrid (Hector), Richard Madrid (Melissa), Jason Fowler-Hammack (Tommy), Alan Hammack (Sara), and David Hammack (Vivian). She has five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Coming from a family of ten, she has several other relatives (nephews, nieces, cousins, etc.). Her husband, Taylor, passed away May 22, 2008. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, no funeral is scheduled at this time. She will be buried at Ft Bayard National Cemetery with her husband of 61 years, Taylor. A memorial will be held at a later date.
