Peter Burnett Escobedo Sr. 90, was called out for his last run on November 6, 2021 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. He was born November 27, 1930 in Hanover, New Mexico. He was raised in Hanover until the age of 12 when he relocated to Nebraska where he attended and graduated from Boys Town Academy. While in school he started boxing on the school team and was very successful. He competed throughout his high school years and before he was drafted to the Army. He had won the welterweight Golden Gloves for the Corn Belt states. In the early 1950s he was drafted into the Army and quickly Advanced through the ranks to Sergeant. He served our country actively in the Korean War and later served in the Army Reserves for 27 years. When he returned back home, he married his wife of 67 years, Juanita Gutierrez Escobedo. Between the years of 1955 and 1959, they had their three children Rosella B Escobedo, Peter B Escobedo III, and John B Escobedo, all of Silver City.

He decided to trade in his boxing gloves and rifle for an apron and knife and began cutting meat at Safeway grocery store in Silver City. He remained there until retirement and when he left was the meat department manager. However, his determination to stay active led him to go into business for himself opening Escobedo Custom Meats. He continued to process animals for all of the Southwest part of New Mexico for many many years to come. He decided to begin roping during his time as a butcher and of course like every hobby, sport, or career path he attempted he succeeded. He traveled all over the state to ropings with his son John. Even after his old bones kept him from competing horseback he would be found twirling his rope at the roping dummy for hours. It was said many times throughout his life that Pete missed his true calling in life and should have become a professional mariachi. Anyone blessed enough to have ever heard his voice would have agreed that it was truly a magical experience. Pete lived such a full life, from boxing to roping, military to butcher, talented musician to loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.

Pete will be forever etched in the heart of this community for his incredibly kind smile and loving, always happy personality. His presence will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his son Peter B. Escobedo III and recently joined by his son John B Escobedo. He is survived by his wife Juanita G Escobedo; his daughter Rosella B Escobedo; four grandchildren, Zia Escobedo Nix, Ciye Yniguez, Jake Lowery, and Shelly Lowry Reno; and four great-grandchildren, Cooper Escobedo Nix, Aria Yniguez, Aspen Yniguez and Gunner Lowry. The rosary service will be held Thursday December 9 2021 at 6 p.m. at Terrazas Funeral Chapel with Father Martin Okonkwo reciting. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday December 10, 2021 at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Oliver Obele officiating. The inurnment to follow St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery. Fellowship reception will conclude the services after the inurnment at the Grant County Conference Center located next to Ace Hardware following the inurnment. In lieu of flowers and donations the family requests that a contribution be made to the Boys Town Academy in Petes name which can be done online at boystown.org.
