tovarobitpic1 copyAlex Carrillo Tovar, 80, a resident of Bayard, NM, entered into eternal rest Saturday, May 27, 2023 at his residence with his loved ones by his side. He was born on February 9, 1943 to his parents Juan and Regina Tovar in Hanover, NM.  

Alex attended Cobre High School and went on to a career in the mining industry as a repairman and retired in 2001. He was known as “Thatha” by his children and “Papo” by his grandchildren. Alex was a strong hard-working man. He had a great sense of humor and had a nickname for all his grandchildren. He loved and was always so proud of his grandchildren successes. He enjoyed attending their sporting events and was always the photographer of the family. He spent countless hours working on the family property and working on his 1949 Chevy. Alex enjoyed the annual Tovar Hunt, where he was the “Camp Chef”. He also enjoyed volunteering his time at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. He was the heart of the family and will deeply be missed. 

Alex was a father of four and was the most loving husband. He touched many lives. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernadette “Bernie” Tovar; his four children, Annette Diaz (Fiance Martin Silva), Cindy Campos (husband Dennis Campos), Alex Tovar Jr. (wife Audrey Tovar) and Regina Vega (husband Frank Vega); his thirteen grandchildren, Conrad Diaz, Antoinette Crutchfield, Brandi Diaz, Angelica Ramos, Regan Ramos, Alyssa Ramos, Destiny Abalos, Paige Tovar, Alejandro Tovar, Presley Tovar, Jared Vega, Jeremy Vega and Jesse Vega; his nine great-grandchildren, Sedona Grace, Zeke, Zack, Zayden, Zander, Ridge, Ella Nora, Avery and Avinity;  his sisters, Rita Montoya(Benny) and Mary Mendoza.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Regina Tovar; his sisters, Soledad Legarda and Elisa Curry; his brothers, Onecimo Tovar, Juan Tovar Jr., Tomas Tovar, Daniel “Danny” Tovar and Manuel Tovar.  

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 1, at 5:00pm-6:00pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels, with the Holy Rosary commencing at 6:00pm with Father Martin Onkonkwo officiating the prayer vigil and Lucille Salas reciting the rosary. The Funeral Mass to honor Alex will be held on Friday, June 2, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Fatima with Father Martin Onkonkwo officiating.  Concluding services, an interment will follow at Hanover Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. Pallbearers are Conrad Diaz, Jared Vega, Regan Ramos, Alejandro Tovar, Jesse Vega and Rudy Legarda. Honorary Pallbearer, Jeremy Vega.
