Brenda Dominguez (El Paso, Tx/Americas HS) turned on the afterburners on the back nine Tuesday as roared past Lindenwood's McKenna Montgomery to defend her 2019 title in the 2020 SMSU Spring Invitational at the Wigwam Resort, near Phoenix. Dominguez shot the tournament's low round of 70 to take her second Blue Ribbon in the event. Matched up with Monday's opening 74, Brenda's even-par 144 effort led her Mustang teammates to a third-place finish in the tournament after rounds of 312-304.

Lindenwood won the tournament with 301-298. Nebraska Kearney finished two shots clear of WNMU to finish second.

Western's Amanda Portillo (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) recorded her best finish for the Mustangs with rounds of 79-76 to finish 11th. Lexi Lucero (Ruidoso, NM/Ruidoso HS) had her best tournament of the year with rounds of 81-78 to finish T15. Chelsea Medina (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) was also solid with a T17 finish with rounds of 78-82, while Julia Enriquez (El Paso, Tx/Eastwood HS) rounded out the scoring for the WNMU to finish T19 with rounds of 81-80.

"I'm really proud of Brenda and her back nine. She was down four shots at the turn and really turned it on and made birdies. She birdied 17 and hit two great shots on a difficult 18th to put the nail in the coffin … just great golf," said WNMU Head Coach Kent Beatty.

The Mustangs get a week off before heading to Pueblo to the El Cheapo Classic on March 21-23.
