With less than 24 hours to recover from the series prior, the Western New Mexico softball team traveled back in state to take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico. Game times were moved up a day due to weather concerns on Sunday.

The Mustang scoring got rolling in the top of the second, as Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) laid down the bunt to grab a base, while scoring the first run of the game. After facing just four batters in the bottom half of the second, the Mustangs were back up to bat with Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) singling to put two runners on. With the bases loaded after a hit by pitch, the Greyhounds resorted to a pitching change in hopes of closing out.
Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) however initiated the new pitcher in with style, doubling to right center for two RBIs. With a runner on third, Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) put one in play, enough to score the Mustangs fourth run.
Things took a turn in the bottom of the third though, as ENMU strung together hit after hit scoring the tying and go ahead run to go in front, 5-4.
Not being counted out yet, Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) caught wind, sending a long ball over the left field wall to tie the game up.
A couple of pinch hitters came in for ENMU in the bottom of the seventh in hopes of grabbing one more run to end the game. Unable to score, the game went into extra innings. WNMU couldn't put it together behind the bat, and then contin
ued to be haunted by errors as ENMU got the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the 6-5 win.

The Greyhounds hot hitting continued on into Game 2 as back-to-back players homered to take a quick 3-0 edge. A sacrifice fly in the next inning, gave ENMU one more.
In the fourth, the Mustang bats responded in a big way as Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez sent a shot over the center field wall. Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) made it two straight with a homerun over the left field fence for two runs. Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) tied up the ball game with a shot to right field, bringing two runners around and advancing to second on an error.
Eastern New Mexico pushed their lead to six in the bottom of the fifth on a two run homer to left field.
With a refuse to lose mentality, WNMU came alive in the top of the seventh. An error placed the lead off hitter on, setting up Alicia Habitzreuther's (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) double. Paredes – Alvarez then found open space to score two. Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) tacked on two more runs with a homerun to right field putting her team within two with just one out.
Before the comeback could be complete, ENMU forced a pop up and the strikeout to claim the game and the series.

The Mustangs will take a break before traveling to UT Permian Basin for a midweek match up in Odessa to close out their three game road trip.
