The Grant County Trails Group (GCTG) supports interconnected trails throughout Grant County and within Silver City.  We are pleased to announce that  Grant County will celebrate National Trails Day™ on Saturday, June 1, 2013, thanks to the Community Enhancement Fund, funding for which is provided by Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., and hosted through the Grant County Community Health Council.

The GCTG will start the day with a guided hike and a guided (mountain) bike ride on local trails. The afternoon program will take place at the Cobre Performing Arts Center in Bayard. It will feature a keynote speech by Richard Kozoll, a public health doctor from Cuba, New Mexico. Dr. Kozoll has been promoting healthy physical activity through "Step into Cuba" a program to develop sidewalks, paths, trails, social support, and opportunities for lifestyle change. The program has received national recognition, including that of the White House and First Lady.

GCTG is also producing a promotional film highlighting local trails and the many people who use them to walk, bike and hike. This film will premiere on National Trails Day™ at Cobre Performing Arts Center. We will also conduct a raffle with great prizes suitable for outdoor enjoyment. Also GCTG is creating a trail guide to make access to our great outdoors easier for our community. The trail guide will be free to all who attend National Trails Day™.

GCTG works closely with the Town of Silver City’s Community Development Department and Silver City MainStreet, among many other local health, environmental, and arts and cultural non-profits and community groups which are dedicated to revitalizing Silver City and Grant County through trail and open space development.
