RESERVE, N.M.; April 14, 2015 - Reserve Ranger District fire managers have started the Sheep Basin Prescribed Fire on the Gila National Forest. The Sheep Basin project is approximately 3,000 acres ten miles southeast of Reserve, NM off Forest Road 141.

Objectives of the prescribed fire are to improve forest health and reduce wildfire threat by removing hazardous fuels. Smoke may be noticeable from various areas on the district as operations continue over the coming days. All areas where prescribed fires are planned will be signed and posted for public awareness and safety.

Prescribed fire is an effective tool managers use to lower the risk of future severe wildfire. Fire crews follow a burn plan that outlines the "prescription" or environmental conditions such as temperature, wind, fuel moisture, ventilation, and humidity that need to be met before the project begins.

Further information may be obtained by contacting Shilow Norton, District Fire Management Officer or Pete Delgado, District Fuels Specialist at (575) 533-6231.
