Silver City will join over 1500 other communities in celebrating America Recycles Day. The Town of Silver City Recycling Advisory Committee and Southwest Solid Waste Authority will be sponsoring a recycling collection on Saturday Nov 14. It will be held at the Office of Sustainability, 1106 N. Pope St. Hours will be from 9AM to noon.

It's an opportunity to recycle old electronics, paper, plastic, tin and aluminum cans and glass bottles and jars. For details on the acceptable materials go to the recycling page at www.townofsilvercity.org. In addition you can drop-off burned out CFL bulbs, old cell phones and batteries. The Lions Club will also be collecting eyeglasses.

Electronics are now being recycled by a different processor, Broadway Metals Inc. in Phoenix. They are R2:2013, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 Certified, meaning it will be the same high standards as before. There will be two changes however. We will receive revenue for the electronics but they will not accept old cathode ray tubes. That means TVs and old computer monitors will no longer be fully recycled. We will continue to accept them and remove some recyclable parts before disposal of the tube.

If you are a Silver City resident and don't have a curbside recycling bin this is your chance to pick one up. We have two sizes available. It will also be an opportunity to pick up a free reusable shopping bag. These durable bags are made of a recycled heavy weight plastic and can be used countless times. The bags were generously provided by Silver City Food Coop.
