The Silver City Police Department wants you to have a safe and memorable holiday! Here are a few tips to help make that possible:

Shopping:
Drive defensively. Traffic is heavier during the holidays. A good rule of thumb is right in, right out of parking lots.

If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area.

Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car.

Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.
Teach your children to stay close to you.

Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in your car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.

Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.

When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. Look in your car before you get in to make sure no unauthorized person is in your vehicle.

Try to use just one credit card for all purchases, just in case it becomes lost or stolen, so you will only have to cancel one card.

Do not leave your purse, handbag or cellphone unattended in your shopping cart.

Be safe and be courteous to your fellow shoppers!

At Home:
Be extra cautious about locking your doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes.

When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail.

Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer.

Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.

Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.

Avoid placing boxes outside until garbage day pickup. Always break down your boxes so it is hard to see what is displayed on the boxes.

If you are out celebrating this holiday season please use a designated driver or Corre Cantinas.

On behalf of the Silver City Police Department, we want to wish you Happy Holidays!!
