Starting now, Border Area Mental Health Services will begin offering monthly back-to-back New Mexico certified Alcohol Server Training classes in Silver City.

All classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays at Hudson Plaza, Suite 11, at 315 S. Hudson St. This month's class dates are Monday, Jan. 18 and Tuesday, Jan. 19, according to Steve May, a program specialist with BAMHS and a certified alcohol server training instructor.

"We know many licensed beer and wine restaurants in Grant County are closed on Mondays, and with us offering a class one Monday each month, perhaps new employees requiring certification and other workers needing recertification to serve and sell alcoholic beverages will have a better opportunity to attend the training," May said.

Cost of the class is $35 per person, May said. "People attending the class will have to pass a 50-question multiple choice test based on the instruction we provide," he added. "We will then issue each person who passes the test a temporary server permit which will be valid until they receive their permanent card from Alcohol and Gaming in Santa Fe."

May emphasized that only money orders, cashier's checks and business checks will be accepted for payment. He also encouraged people planning to attend the training to bring snacks or a sack lunch since the class continues through the lunch hour.
