Oct. 29 at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street - "Dispelling the Illusion of Futility" Jamie Newton, host of Civil Discourse, a public affairs program of Gila/Mimbres Community Radio (KURU) in Silver City, will discuss ways that those in power seek to preserve their dominance and privilege by convincing challengers that resistance is futile. However, activists should not resign themselves to the self-defeating paralysis of despair. Using examples from diverse communities, he will explore social and spiritual foundations of effective movements for peace, justice, equality, and sustainability. Newton's perspective is formed by his background as a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), as a social psychologist, and as a practitioner of nonviolent action for more than fifty years. Although this is not a Family Program Sunday, there will be childcare available for parents who would like to attend. There will be coffee and conversation after the service, and visitors are always welcome.
