Wilderness District to be closed Wednesday, May 10; No sales at Glenwood District this week

SILVER CITY, NM, May 8, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District will be open this week to provide information to visitors, but staff will not be available to sell maps, passes, or other products. The Wilderness Ranger District will be closed on Wednesday, May 10, with no staff available to support visitor services. Additionally, the Black Range Ranger District closed without notice two days last week due to water service outages related to construction near the office. The potential for future outages and subsequent unannounced office closure exists.

“The National Forests are suffering from the same ‘great resignation’ as other local businesses and government agencies over the past several years,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor, Camille Howes. “We are looking to fill vacancies with local talent. If you or someone you know is looking for work and loves public land, reach out to learn about opportunities to make a difference in your community and enjoy a lifelong career with the Gila National Forest.”

While we work to find and hire additional staff, and with ongoing construction in Truth or Consequences, we recommend calling ahead to ensure staff availability if you plan to visit one of these offices:
