Celebrate your Independence Day on the Gila; leave the fireworks at home.

SILVER CITY, NM, June 26, 2023 – Gila National Forest offices in Quemado, Reserve, Glenwood, Mimbres, Truth or Consequences, and Silver City will be closed on Tuesday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Normal hours and operations will resume Wednesday, July 5.

“With more than 30 developed campgrounds and nearly 1 million acres of designated wilderness on 3.3 million acres of the Gila National Forest, we have something for everyone to enjoy,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. “The forest is a great place to get away and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature during the summer holidays.”

Leave sparklers, fireworks and other pyrotechnics at home – they are always prohibited on all national forests. Fire danger is currently rated “high” and conditions are approaching “very high”. Before you head out, always check for fire restrictions that could affect your visit. After you arrive, read posted signs to stay current on the status of campfires and other regulations.

If campfires are allowed, and if conditions permit, be sure to clear flammable materials from around your fire ring before you light. Keep water and a shovel handy and never leave a hot fire ring unattended. When you go to bed or when you leave camp, be sure your coals are cold to the touch with your bare hand. Unattended hot coals equal an illegal, unattended fire. Don’t let your campfire become the next wildfire. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov.
