SILVER CITY, NM, Sept. 1, 2023 – Gila National Forest offices in Quemado, Reserve, Glenwood, Mimbres, Truth or Consequences, and Silver City will be closed on Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. Normal hours and operations will resume Tuesday, Sept. 5.

“The forest is a great place to get away and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature during this last holiday weekend of the summer,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. “With more than 30 developed campgrounds and nearly 1 million acres of designated wilderness on 3.3 million acres of the Gila National Forest, we have something for everyone to enjoy.”

Please take your time while travelling forest roads and be respectful of private property and other visitors. Before you head out, always check for fire restrictions that could affect your visit. After you arrive, read posted signs to stay current on the status of campfires and other regulations.

If conditions permit a campfire, be sure to clear flammable materials from around your fire ring before you light. Keep water and a shovel handy and never leave a hot fire ring unattended. When you go to bed or when you leave camp, be sure your coals are cold to the touch with your bare hand. Unattended hot coals equal an illegal, unattended fire. Don’t let your campfire become the next wildfire. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov .
