SANTA FE, N.M. (September 21, 2023) National Dance Institute (NDI) New Mexico today announced its residency dance program for more than 200 local students. The program, which runs Sept. 25 through Oct. 12, will culminate in live performances of “Reach Out! Sweet Sounds of Motown” on Oct. 12.

Participants include students from the Harrison Schmitt, Central, GW Stout, and Jose Barrios elementary schools, as well students from Guadalupe Montessori, Aldo Leopold Charter, La Plata Middle School, Pecos Cyber Academy and Snell Middle School. Students who are members of NDI New Mexico’s Super Wonderful Advanced Team and Celebration Team will participate in the program, as well local kindergarteners, parents, and schoolteachers.

In addition to providing a creative and celebratory community event, the residency program will offer NDI New Mexico’s highly effective teaching methodology that incorporates dance instruction with live musical accompaniment, and emphasizes social-emotional skills such as teamwork, self-confidence and self-discipline that are critical to children’s long-term development.

“NDI New Mexico is celebrating 30 years of excellence in New Mexico and our 30th year of partnership with the families, educators, and civic leaders of Silver City,” said NDI New Mexico Residency Artistic Director Lauren O’Brien. “We are thrilled to have so many local students as an important part of our celebration and encourage the Silver City community to come to the performances and see the results of their hard work, teamwork and energy.”

The live performances will be held at 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theater, 1100-1102 N. Kentucky St., Silver City, N.M.

The NDI New Mexico residency dance program in Silver City is made possible through the support of the New Mexico Department of Health, the New Mexico State Legislature, Freeport-McMoRan, the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, and the United Way of Southwest New Mexico.

NDI New Mexico’s residency programs bring NDI New Mexico experiences of music and dance to children in 15 rural and urban communities across the state of New Mexico. The program provides a certified NDI instructor and pianist to teach dance as part of each school’s curriculum for children ages 5-13.
