A free press and good journalists speak truth to power. They arm audiences with the knowledge needed to distinguish truth from fake news.

The 2023 Southwest Word Fiesta Journalism panel on Saturday, October 28 will feature David Aristo, Nina Burleigh, and Lisa Jimenez, discussing modern-day challenges in this profession. This session will be held from 11:30-12:30 pm MDT at the Global Resource Center Auditorium.

David Aristo is the author of This Is Cuba: An American Journalist Under Castro's Shadow. The Library Journal gave it a coveted starred review and wrote: "Ariosto's work is at times chilling, but with a touch of nostalgia and humor.Cuba watchers should read this informative new work, as should all interested in a country that is geographically closer to the United States than some might realize.” David Ariosto will appear with us virtually, on Zoom.

Nina Burleigh will make a virtual return trip to Silver City via Zoom. An investigative journalist, Burleigh is a New York Times bestselling author of seven acclaimed works of creative nonfiction. Her latest book is Virus: Vaccinations, the CDC, and the Hijacking of America's Response to the Pandemic. She previously appeared at Western New Mexico University as part of their Distinguished Speaker series. 

Lisa Jimenez, a Silver City Press correspondent and shamanic healer presented “Life Cafe” at the Silver City Library, examining the issue of dignified deaths. Lisa Jimenez will appear in-person.
