Gila National Forest extends submission deadline two weeks to December 15

MIMBRES, NM, December 1, 2023 – In an effort to reach a few more artists, the deadline for submitting Gila Wilderness-themed artwork has been extended by two weeks. Selected works will be included in Gila Wilderness Centennial posters, to be used as part of an outreach campaign happening next year in celebration of 100 years of the Gila Wilderness.

“Centennial celebrations in 2024 will incorporate our communities, art, music, food, theatre, and so much more. This poster contest is the primer, incorporating artwork by members of the public into educational and outreach materials that will be used throughout next,” said Wilderness District Ranger Henry Provencio. “We received some very impressive works and we wanted to give just a little more time to allow for broader public participation.”

To be eligible for consideration, all works submitted must be inspired by the Gila Wilderness and represent one or more of the five characteristics of Wilderness: untrammeled; natural; undeveloped; opportunities for solitude and primitive, unconfined recreation; and other characteristics that make the Gila uniquely special. Artwork must be no smaller than 16” x 20” to be published on a 20”x30” poster. No more than two entries per person allowed, and copyrighted materials are not eligible. Entries must include an artist statement, with a few lines about what is unique or special about the Gila Wilderness, and which Wilderness characteristics are represented in your piece. Entries will be accepted in digital format with these specifications: 150 pixels per inch or 2500 x 3750 or greater. No signatures should show on the artwork, and image file names should not include artist name – entries must be anonymous for judging. Entries may be submitted electronically to SM.FS.GilaPoster@usda.gov , or by mail or in person at 3005 E. Camino del Bosque, Silver City, NM 88061. All entries must be submitted by December 15, 2023.

Finally, permission must be granted to the Forest Service to photographically reproduce any submitted works for publicity or educational purposes. This includes but is not limited to using your artwork (with credit) for social media posts, printed handouts, posters, or promotional videos. Visit Gila National Forest - History & Culture (usda.gov) for the artwork submission form that must accompany all entries. An honorarium in the amount of $100 will be awarded to all artists whose artwork is selected for inclusion in Gila Wilderness Centennial posters. There is no fee for entry in the competition.
