PatSterlingDecember 31, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "History and Folklore of the Christmas or Solstice Tree”

On December 31, before the twelve days of Christmas end on January 5, and before most people have taken down their holiday decorations, Dr. Pat Sterling will discuss the history and folklore associated with the Solstice/Christmas tree.

She will attempt to shed light on some questions people may have about the use of evergreen trees in our celebrations.

“Is it true that the tradition of bringing evergreen trees and branches into the house can be traced back to pagan Solstice practices? When did the Christmas tree as we know it today become incorporated into the Christian celebration of Christmas? Has it always been a universally accepted tradition in Christian homes, or has it created controversy at times? Does the U.S. government consider the Christmas tree a religious or a secular symbol? And in folk tales does the evergreen remain green all year as a reward or as a punishment from the gods?” Sterling said. “We’ll answer these questions and more.”

Dr. Pat Sterling is a retired Professor of English from Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado.
