Gila National Forest offices to be closed Monday, January 15

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

SILVER CITY, NM, January 10, 2024 – All Gila National Forest offices will be closed Monday, January 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Normal office hours will resume on Tuesday, January 16 at the Gila National Forest Supervisor’s Office, and Silver City, Wilderness, Glenwood, Black Range, Reserve, and Quemado Ranger Districts.

Every third Monday in January, the United States honors the achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., the most influential African American civil rights leader of the 1960s. He advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation in the United States and was instrumental in passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1964 and was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

Dr. King’s speech during the 1963 March on Washington has endured as a signature moment of the civil rights struggle. He said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.’.”

Your dream is still alive, Dr. King. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov .
