Cherry Creek, McMillan, and Iron Creek campgrounds temporarily closed

SILVER CITY, NM, January 19, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District has temporarily closed the Cherry Creek and McMillan campgrounds along New Mexico Highway 15 and Iron Creek Campground along New Mexico Highway 152 due to ice-related safety hazards.

“Recent snow storms delivered significant snow to the area last week, and freeze-thaw cycles have hardened it into a thick layer of ice that poses a hazard to drivers and pedestrians,” said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. “These sites will be monitored regularly and reopened once conditions allow.”
