Thin ice presents a very real risk of falling into frigid water

QUEMADO, NM, January 29, 2024 – Recent warming weather has created dangerously thin ice on Quemado Lake, threatening the safety of anyone walking out on it. The Gila National Forest strongly advises against ice fishing or going on the ice for any reason.

“Although a closure is not in place, I would ask anyone visiting Quemado Lake to remember that your safety is a concern and not go on the thin ice,” said Quemado District Ranger Randall Chavez.
