Silver City Ranger District to implement an area closure for public safety

SILVER CITY, NM, April 15, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is implementing an area closure while it conducts the 2,010-acre Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire project. Area closure went into effect April 12 and will remain in effect until the area is safe for public re-entry, likely several days. Phase 1 of the Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire will be carried out this week as resource availability and conditions allow.

“This area closure includes the minimum area necessary to keep the public out of harm’s way while live fire is applied to the landscape,” said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. “It will be in effect only for the minimum period of time needed for the protection of public safety.”

The Cameron Creek project is located along the west side of Grant County Road 1-152/Forest Road 536. The area closure is bounded by Trails #727 Fence Line, #758 Cornell Ranch, and #55 Woodhaul Wagon Road on the west, #756 Stevens Ranch on the north and northeast, Grant County Road 1-0152 on the east, and Forest Road 110 on the south (please see the attached map). Trail guards will stand guard direct visitors away from the prescribed fire project. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov .
