Sharing meals is an activity that is central to the human experience. From our earliest days as a species, we have used food not just as a fuel, but as a way to bond with other community members. We use food to celebrate, to mourn, to commemorate. The word "companion" is derived from the late Latin word "companio", which meant "messmate" or "someone you share a meal with." There's something about the act of enjoying good food that lends itself to building community. We can't go without food, which means that every meal we consume is ultimately a celebration of life.

Grant County has had a turbulent few years, thanks to COVID, natural disasters, and economic uncertainty. Despite all of this, we're still here, working and making our way through the world as best we can, helping each other along the way. The Grant County Chamber of Commerce wants to celebrate the best of who we are at our Annual Banquet, which will be held December 1 and is fiesta themed. It's fitting that we as a community sit down together as companions, share a meal, and celebrate life. We have a fine program, headlined by dynamic speaker Rob Black, the President, and CEO of the New Mexico State Chamber of Commerce. He will be discussing the current economic environment and how chambers around the state are working to alleviate these struggles. Maria Jimenez will be entertaining us with song and the Order of the Eastern Star will provide a meal worthy of a Fiesta. The Little Toad Creek will be providing cash bar featuring locally produced beverages.

In addition, we'll be presenting awards to community members and businesses who have given enormous amounts of time, energy, and love to those in need. We want to recognize the quiet heroes who go out every day with the desire to make the world a better place. Most of the time, they're too busy to do anything for themselves, and we want to honor these wonderful, generous and souls and businesses that have continued to adapt to all the obstacles that come with an ever-changing economy. We would like to let them know that their work is noticed and appreciated.

Come out December 1, 2022, and break bread with us. We won't be roasting meat over an open fire, but the spirit that comes from sharing a meal hasn't changed since the days of our ancestors. We at the Chamber of Commerce hope that you'll come out and join us in celebrating life and honoring those among us who make life a little better in our community.
