What about Brett Favre? Some of you may not have heard that phrase used in the context that many sports media personalities are using it. Stephen A Smith, Bomani Jones, Mark Jacobs, and other African American pundits would attempt to defend the actions of African American sports stars by saying Brett Farve engaged in similar misconduct but was not punished in the same way. It's an attempt to give an example of so-called white privilege but also try and diminish the actions of the person they were trying to defend.
Certainly this tactic has been used by many of us when we were kids to try and avoid punishment from our parents for example. I remember when I angrily stormed out of our house, angrily shoving the front door open, breaking the glass and getting a cut that required a trip to the hospital where I got stitches. I tried to 'justify' or minimize the severity of my actions by point out something one of my sisters had done. I don't know what the deflection or trying by comparison to say well she didn't get punished as bad as you're gonna punish me but it's what immature people do to avoid the consequences of their actions.
When NFL QB Deshaun Watson was dismissed by the Houston Texans because of multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment against their star player, the aforementioned pundits kept saying what about Brett Farve? He was accused of similar actions but never got suspended for 11 games or lost his job. The comparison was inappropriate as Farve was accused of propositioning a team employee; Watson was accused of forcing himself on over two dozen massage therapists. But it did not stop people from trying to make the comparison and somehow prove Watson was being treated differently because of the color of his skin.
Now we are seeing the same thing when it comes to Joe Biden and the increasing evidence that his and his family profited handsomely off of their influence peddling. Every time someone brings up the evidence that shows not only is Hunter Biden being given preferential treatment by the Department of Justice but so is the entire family. There is enough evidence to cause anyone with an open mind to believe the FBI should move forward with an investigation. Yet every time the evidence comes to light, there's a significant group of people that asked the question, "what about Trump?". As if somehow Biden should be excused for the actions of his family and himself because what Donald Trump might have done is worse.
The biggest difference is that Donald Trump has been indicted on multiple charges where there is significantly less evidence of wrongdoing. Joe Biden has not been indicted and Hunter's indictments deal solely with tax evasion and gun possession not influence peddling or bribery. The two situations have nothing to do with each other. Lady Justice is supposed to be blind and treat every case based upon the merits. If someone received preferential treatment before, that should be used only as an example of how not to handle a case. It does not justify letting someone else avoid the consequences of their actions.
If Donald Trump is guilty of the accusations, Trump supporters expect that he should be punished. Joe Biden supporters will never hold the same expectations. But they don't mind living in a banana republic, as long as the leaders agree with their opinions.
