Socialist New York Congresswoman Introduces Bill to Ban All Fracking – New Mexico Representatives Silent

Albuquerque – New Mexico’s families deserve to know where their representatives stand when it comes to a disastrous new proposal from New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. On Wednesday, the self-described “democratic socialist” introduced a bill to ban fracking throughout the United States. New Mexico’s three House members Rep. Deb Haaland, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan and Rep. Xochitl Torres Small have not taken a position on the proposal.

“The silence of our representatives is deafening and New Mexicans deserve better,” said Larry Behrens, Western States Director for Power The Future. “New Mexico’s energy workers use fracking to produce over 100,000 jobs and billions to our economy. The fact that a socialist representative from New York wants to destroy our economy deserves nothing but condemnation from New Mexico’s elected representatives.”

A 2019 study from the Global Energy Institute found a ban on fracking in New Mexico will cost the loss of 142,000 jobs or nearly 16% of the entire state’s workforce. It would also cause New Mexico’s families to lose $26 billion, or more than $10,000 per household in income in 2025.

Power The Future New Mexico is calling on New Mexico’s House Representatives to take a position on the measure. The bill is being referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources of which New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland is a member.
