The Silver City Museum‘s August craft class is making a medicine pouch for crafters eight years and older, on Saturday, August 10, 2013, from 10 am to 12 noon at the Museum. The Silver City Museum is located at 312 W. Broadway.

Crafters will make their very own medicine pouch/bag. A medicine pouch (or "medicine bundle," as it is sometimes called) is a container for items believed to protect or give spiritual powers to its owner. Often worn around the neck, the bag itself was usually made out of an animal skin. Sinew or rawhide lace was usually used to sew the bag to be worn or hung. The size of the medicine pouch usually dictated what and how many "power objects" could be placed in it. Medicine pouches are made by many cultures. Create your very own medicine pouch for your special objects.

The class is recommended for crafters aged 8 years and older. Pre-registration is encouraged. Craft classes will continue to be offered on the second Saturday of each month at the Museum. The classes are geared towards elementary school-aged children, with parent/guardian attendance required. Crafters of all ages are welcome to register for the craft classes. These classes are a great opportunity for family craft making!

Fees are: $5.00 per class. Register in advance with Charmeine Wait at 538-5921 or email cwait@silvercitymuseum.org.

Funding in part for these programs and exhibits is made possible thanks to the members and volunteers of the Silver City Museum Society.
