Don Turner’s talk on the evolution of rodeo ties in with the Silver City Museum’s exhibit Ranching in Grant County. This photo is in the exhibit, circa 1920 at a rodeo at Fort Bayard, right in front of the old hospital.On Saturday, March 21, at the Silco Theatre at 10:30am, the Silver City Museum is proud to host “Sheriff” Don Turner speaking on The History of Rodeo in Grant County & Beyond.

It will be a moderated discussion covering the origins of rodeo beginning with informal wagers, Wild West shows, and the eventual evolution into a sporting event.

There will be historical photos, including some of the first arenas and early events in Grant County, the entry of women into the sport primarily with trick-riding and roping, and the role rodeo competition played in ranch life.

Don Turner is fourth generation Grant Countian who has been around rodeo all his life. His father was a rodeo competitor and Don followed in his footsteps, specializing in various roping events.

Don is also the long-time leader (known as Sheriff) of the local chapter of the Westerners, an organization focused on Southwestern history. The Westerners meet third Tuesdays of even-numbered months at 6:30pm at the Cross Point Church. Anyone interested can attend a meeting or call Don at 575-574-5266.

The Silver City Museum has extended the duration of its extensive and popular exhibit, Ranching in Grant County. Don was one of many historians and ranchers who contributed to this thoroughly researched local exhibit featuring many ranch artifacts, historical photos, family stories, surprising facts and infographics.
