The Silver City Public Library is pleased to announce the opening of the 2020 Día de los Muertos student artwork virtual exhibit, accessible at silvercitypubliclibrary.org. The virtual exhibit is debuting in conjunction with Silver City’s other Día de los Muertos activities, including a community ofrenda at Diana Ingalls Leyba Studio and Gallery, an Arte Chicano exhibit at the Silver City Museum, and a virtual procession.

“Normally the library is able to display student art prominently on the walls immediately after the Día de los Muertos street fair and procession, and we all enjoy the students’ work very much,” said Lillian Galloway, library assistant director. “While the library building is closed, we are glad to have another way to feature the artists’ work.”

The library has also been given the opportunity to participate in a Facebook premiere of a concert by Las Flores del Valle, in collaboration with the Museum of International Folk Art and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Wonders on Wheels van.

The concert will premier virtually on Facebook at 7pm Sunday, November 1; visit facebook.com/SilverCityPublicLibrary. Carol Vigil and Leila Flores-Dueñas comprise the New Mexico women’s dueto whose smooth harmonies are reminiscent of the many hermanas duos that became famous in the 1960s and helped to form lasting harmony structures of today’s US/Mexico Borderlands music. Joined by multi-talented musician and cultural anthropologist, David F. Garcia, Las Flores del Valle aim to preserve and share the nuances of the many musical genres that are representative of their family histories.
