Bored?  Looking for something fun and rewarding to do?

Join the volunteers in your area (Silver City, Bayard, Mimbres) and help people file their income tax returns.

I know what you are thinking. “I don’t know anything about preparing taxes — I’m not smart enough to prepare tax returns.” None of that matters. Have you ever filed your taxes on Turbo Tax or one of the other online sites? If you have, then you have the computer skills needed to become a volunteer.

Actually, all you need is basic computer skills. There are lots of jobs available that you can help us with. Returning phone calls and setting up appointments. Scanning documents, preparing tax returns on-line from your home just to name a few.  Many of our volunteer don’t prepare a tax returns, they just do one of the other jobs.

AARP provides the volunteers with computers and training.

Of course, this year it is going to be very different than in years past due to the Pandemic. Usually four or five volunteers get together at the preparation site (like the Bayard library) and work as a group preparing tax returns.

This year many volunteers will never see any of the clients in person. AARP is still working out the details, but only a few people this year will have face to face contact with taxpayers and it will be very briefly. Most contact will be by phone and paperwork. This is probably a good year to volunteer if you would like to test the waters of volunteering with the AARP.  The volunteers, and our clients, are all great people and we have lots of fun, and it is a very rewarding volunteer job. You wouldn’t believe how grateful and appreciative our clients are, and most of them cannot afford the services of paid preparers.

If you would like to volunteer or talk about what is involved, please call Joe Wlosinski at 575-519-9463 or Mary Willhite at 575-536-9323.
