Sharman Apt Russell will read from her recent book “Within Our Grasp: Childhood Malnutrition Worldwide and the Revolution Taking Place to End It” (Pantheon Books, April, 2021) and answer questions from the audience. One-fourth of the world's children are stunted physically and mentally due to a lack of food or nutrients. These children do not die but endure a lifetime of diminished potential. “Within Our Grasp” is an important, hopeful book that looks at successful approaches and programs working to end this unnecessary suffering.

As a longtime nature and science writer, Russell believes that environmental and humanitarian goals are aligned. A healthy Earth requires healthy children, just as healthy children require a healthy Earth. She believes in the miracle of the body: how we turn food and nutrients into thought and story. And she believes in the power of story. "We are the story-telling animal," she writes. "Feeding all our children is such a good story." Russell will talk about her travels in Malawi researching this book, why the empowerment of women is key to eliminating childhood malnutrition, and what economists have to say about the costs and benefits of ending hunger.
