The Southwestern Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico is hosting its annual meeting on Thursday, October 6 at 6:30 pm. The meeting this year will be hybrid, and attendees are invited to attend in person at the Miller Library at 1000 W College Ave, in Silver City or by Zoom. This year’s speakers will be Denali Wilson and Carissa McGee, who will discuss their efforts to end life in prison as a sentencing option for children in New Mexico and create early parole eligibility for children serving long adult sentences. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session. Denali Wilson is a staff attorney at the ACLU of New Mexico based in Las Cruces. She represents people across the state who are serving long adult sentences for crimes committed decades ago when they were children. Carissa McGee is an advocate for sentencing reform, a self-publishing author, a co-founder of a grassroots nonprofit organization called Women In Leadership, and a Program Manager at Project ECHO with the University of New Mexico.

The presentation and Q&A session will be from 6:30-7:30pm followed by chapter board elections. All active members of the ACLU are welcome to participate in this process.
