Heather D. Frankland will present the second workshop in The Write Stuff writing series, a 2-hour talk: Soaking in the Soil, the Use of Landscape in Poetry and Creative Nonfiction.
It will be offered on October 29 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City, 3845 N Swan St, Silver City, NM.
Soaking in the Soil, the Use of Landscape in Poetry and Creative Nonfiction: By using selected readings as inspiration, we will look at how to effectively incorporate landscape into one’s poetry and creative nonfiction. The workshop and prompts will focus on exploring one’s connection to natural, rural, and/or urban areas. It will also look at how to use place as plot, reflection, and general inspiration.
Heather D. Frankland lives in Silver City, NM and teaches English Composition at Western New Mexico University. She is a reader for Mimbres Press and a steering committee member of the Southwest Word Fiesta. Her creative nonfiction essays have been finalists in Desert Exposure’s Annual Writing Contest and in Slippery Elm Literary Journal’s Prose Contest. Her poem, “Two Dollar Mangos,” was recently a semi-finalist for the Jane Underwood Poetry Prize of The Writing Salon. She is also really happy to be a new member of the River Poets group of Silver City.
Although Heather has lived in NM for many years, she grew up in Indiana, and has lived in various landscapes from Chicago to Peru. She holds an MFA and a MPH from New Mexico State University, and she was a Peace Corps and Peace Corps Response Volunteer in Peru and Panama. Heather has been published in Sweet Lit, Desert Exposure, Flying Island Journal, Sin Fronteras Press, and others. She is currently working on a few writing projects.
The Write Stuff, a program presented by Southwest Word Fiesta and hosted by award-winning author and writing instructor Kris Neri, will share the techniques required for writers to elevate the professionalism of their works. This program will present a series of in-depth writing workshops throughout the year, offered by a some of the most accomplished local authors and instructors on a variety of writing challenges.
The third presentation in The Write Stuff series will be a 2-hour program on place-based fiction and finding your voice, offered by award-winning Grant County author Catalina Claussen, on Saturday, December 10, at 10 am. That workshop will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City. Other workshops will follow.
All workshops will be free and open to the public. No reservations. Seating is limited.
