Gila/Mimbres Community Radio co-sponsors musical entertainment at the Farmers Market, welcomes shoppers, and encourages everyone to support non-profit, non-commercial radio. Gila/Mimbres Community Radio / KURU 89.1 FM announced a CELEBRATION OF SPRING, and an invitation to help grow the community of support for our own local radio station. The three-day event, March 30 – April 1, will include an open house 10 AM – 4 PM on Saturday, April 1, at the station, 519-B N. Bullard St., Silver City, NM (at the corner with Sixth Street). Visitors will be welcomed with refreshments and opportunities to meet the station manager, Marcus Hanson, Board members, DJs and Program Hosts, and community members whose music, poetry, and commentary are featured in our local broadcasts.

“Our Celebration of Spring will culminate on Saturday night, April 1st, with a family-friendly April Fools Dance 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. in the Murray Ballroom with music by the Big Ditch Crickets. Everybody will have fun – kids and adults alike. Zany costumes are welcomed,” said Station Manager Marcus Hanson. “We’ll have a silent auction in the Murray Ballroom that evening as well, so come ready to bid on cool items you just can’t resist. If you can part with something others would like, bring it to the dance. All proceeds will support GMCR / KURU 89.1 FM.”

Board member Jamie Newton emphasized that this noncommercial radio station is funded entirely by the community, adding “We know that many people who listen and appreciate what they hear don’t realize that to sustain our high-quality programming and flourish in Grant County, the station needs to expand the base of people who donate regularly. That’s why we ask current supporters not only to continue their own donations, which are essential, but also to help with our Each One, Reach One campaign. We urge each listener to invite at least one friend to experience the music, news, in-depth commentary, and cultural programs on KURU 89.1 FM and streaming 24/7 at GMCR.org. We hope new listeners will donate what they can, to keep our unique programs flowing to Grant County and the surrounding region – and to the whole world over the Internet.”

The station’s art raffle is continuing as well. When 400 tickets have been sold at $25 each, five winners will each receive a valuable piece by a renowned local artist (Marilyn Gendron, the late Tom Holt, and others). Tickets may be bought at the station, where the art on display, and at the dance on Saturday, April 1, in the Murray Ballroom.
